Once the formal health and safety bits are done with all courses are run in an informal fashion encouraging questions, involvement and fun.
For basic learning and the acquisition of skills we do strongly suggest that participants initially make the standard pieces to ensure they have a grasp of the techniques before moving on to consider design and joinery.
Offers an opportunity to have a go to see if green woodwork is for you. This one day course covers the basic skills of 'bodging', traditionally used for the making of chair components. All the tools and pieces of equipment will be explained and the techiques of CLEAVING, TRIMMING, SHAVING and TURNING practiced. Participants will take home at least 2 things they have made, more if they are quick learners.
A 2 day course that starts with the basics skills, as described, and progresses to basic joinery, making items such as milking stools, peg rails, boot racks etc.
A 2 day course for the student with a basic understanding of the craft. This course allows the student to consolitate and improve skills learned on previous courses and make things of their own choice (e.g. shave horse). More ambitious projects, such as a chair, could be made over two weekends. An additional material charge may be made for the undertaking of more advanced projects. Feel free to contact us to discuss your project prior to booking.
Offers students with some basic woodworking knowledge and an understanding of green woodwork the chance to make their own pole-lathe and learn how to set up and improve their turning skills. The price of this course includes all the materials required. Due to the amount of bench work required for this project this course is usually run in a workshop.
This is not a specific course but people wanting to make their own Shave Horse can join one of the other courses and make this as an advanced project. We advise that you have some green woodwork experience before tackling this project. There is a lot of physical axe/adze work, drawknife and turning work involved.
The courses are held in various woodland locations in and around the Cotswolds. Where possible we will be working in the woods with some form of shelter, from the natural elements, and an open fire to ensure a steady supply of tea.
All of the green woodworking courses are appropriate for adult participants of any skill level, novice to expert. Under 16’s must be accompanied by a participating adult.
